Great Plains Residence
Sven Alstrom, Designer
East Elevation
South Elevation
This five bedroom home was designed for a small town professional with two young children. The east facing 75 ft. x 125 ft. lot was flat so we put a sunken greenhouse in the southwest corner to bring light into the basement level as well as provide a passive solar heating element and gardening center for the home. The main level is 1982 sq. ft. (with additional full basement) and the house is entirely built of 6 ½ inch SIPS (structueral insulated panels) with 8 inch SIPS for the roof. Woodburning fireplace stoves on both levels supplement the geothermal driven radiant flooring throughout. The central stairway also would allow expansion of a second loft area into a large dormer above the main floor bedrooms if desired. Hot water domestic solar panels are planned in combination with a gas on demand hot water heater. The basement floor plan includes two additional bedrooms and a large family room / media room which also serves as a tornado shelter on the Great Plains . |
