Mining Barn
Joe Prudden, Architect

Description
This 2062 sf home is designed to resemble an old western mine building. Since it is designed for passive solar heating and passive cooling, it could be close to a "zero energy home", depending upon climate and wall thickness. It has a compact footprint suitable for a site that requires height in order to get views and solar gain. It is built with Structural Insulated Panels (SIP's) and Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF's). The plans are simple to increase the efficiency of building and to reduce costs. It has a 774 sf. basement that could be finished or left unfinished that was designed to get the main level above the snow, but this could be eliminated if needed. The garage is on the basement level. The materials have been selected for low maintenance.

Joe can produce the blueprints, but as of now these have not been prepared. He would like to see this home built, so he would offer the rest of the design work at cost, just to cover his time. The hard part is done, but it would still take him a couple of weeks to produce the construction documents and to get the structural drawings completed. So he is offering to complete the design at $1.00 per sf. He would complete the engineering for your specific location and unique needs and also tweek the solar design to your needs. Any changes are at an hourly rate but you would be getting a semi-custom home that is virtually a Zero energy home.
